Job : R J Cornish, Cobram, Victoria, Australia

A large number of pickers are required during the season Jan - Mar
(up to 200 pickers per week)
Also experienced Tractor Drivers.
Picking usually starts on our orchard around January 20 starting with pears, followed by peaches and then apples. The season usually extends for most workers up to the end of March with some apple picking being done in April.
A smaller number of pickers are required beyond this date to assist with our apple crops.
Fruit pickers are paid a contract rate so the more fruit you pick the more you earn.
Fruit picking is good healthy outdoor work. Pickers are paid 'piece' or contract rates, ie. the more you pick the more you get paid.
We have a large number of fruit pickers from all over Australia and all around the world, so not only do you have the opportunity to earn a decent income you are bound to meet some really interesting people.
Picking is done both from ground level and from steel ladders, so you need to be fairly healthy as there is a fair bit of carrying, lifting and walking.
The fruit is picked into a bag which is slung over your shoulders in a harness fashion and then emptied into the 'bin'. The bin holds the equivalent of 22 cases of fruit, so it will take some time to fill a bin up. If you are new to fruit picking you may find it fairly difficult to begin with, but within a couple of days you will find that your tallies are increasing as you develop better technique.
Before you start working on our orchard you will be instructed in the correct technique of using a picking ladder and other aspects of fruit picking. By following these guides you will find that you will be more successful and that your body will stand up to the rigors of the work far better.
Some pickers make quite good wages, where as others struggle to make a basic amount. It is really up to you.
Because it is generally warm you should dress for the environment. This does not mean working without a shirt etc to get a great sun tan! A long sleeved shirt and a soft brimmed hat are recommended and if not accustomed to wearing shorts, wear long trousers. Boots or shoes with a firm sole will protect your feet. Thongs or bare feet are not acceptable. Sun screen is advisable for protection from the sun and hats are compulsory for health reasons.
To work with us you must be an Australian citizen or an Australian permanent resident, or have a valid temporary Australian visa that allows employment.
There is a variety of accommodation available for seasonal labor workers.
