Cherry harvest usually starts in late June in Osoyoos, and gradually works its way north. Depending on how warm it has been onward from blossom time in April, the harvest date may vary 7-8 days from year to year. Harvest around Kelowna usually starts just after mid July. Harvest in the Winfield/ Okanagan Centre areas, as well as some of the higher elevations south of Kelowna, starts late July and lasts till mid August. In the Creston area harvest usually starts in late July and lasts through much of August. Activities on each farm usually last 2-4 weeks - occasionally 5-6 weeks. During the most intense part of the season many growers will harvest daily for 10-14 days with out a break. Harvest is weather dependant, and ceases during periods of rain. Very prolonged rain may cause extensive "splitting" on the cherries, occasionally to the point where further harvesting is not economically viable. TYPICAL HOURS OF WORK: Because the Okanagan Valley experiences quite a warm climate, pickers start their day early and end with the heat of the day. Sorters and packers can work throughout the day because of a cooler climate inside the packing house. Picking Sorting/Packing 5:00am - 1:00pm Usually an 8-9 hour shift some orchards have two shifts per day WAGES: Above minimum wage, with incentives. WHO'S HIRING? Most keep "lists" from year to year so be sure to make your contacts early with the individual orchardist.
